0-4 in our Week 1 College Football Bets, Let’s talk about it

Happy Labor Day Fellas! I wish I was coming on here to talk about our winners this weekend, but it’s the exact opposite. We were in preseason form, and it showed. 4 games and 4 losers. All 4 really had no chance. Let’s run through them.

Florida @ Utah

Let’s talk Florida. To kick off the season, we had the Gators +5.5 at Utah. To be honest, it was dead after the 70-yard TD from Barnes to Parks on Utah’s first play. The Gators looked horrible. Utah didn’t do anything special and their backup QB hung in there and didn’t turn the ball over or make costly mistakes. Florida on the other hand, made every mistake possible. Missing field goals, getting penalties on a 4th down punt for having 2 players with same number on the field (like how), and Mertz with a costly INT. The difference in the game, penalties and coaching. Kyle Whittingham controlled the game, and the Gators could never get comfortable.

Florida Vs Utah Highlights

Washington State @ Colorado State

My goodness this game was ugly. Where do I start? We had Wazzu / Colorado State under 54 points. The first half went as expected. 20 points and I felt pretty good going into the second half. Then the 4th Quater happened, we will get into that shortly.

Colorado State’s QB is the worst in FBS. Yes, the worst. Clay Millen doesn’t belong on the field, it was ugly. We were on track and then he threw a pick-6 to Jaden Hicks and the game turned for the worst. 42 points in the 4th quarter. Let me repeat that, 42! With the new offensive coordinator, Wazzu plays fast. They were up 29-3 and were still snapping the ball late in the 3rd quarter with 30+ seconds on the play clock. Maybe they are trying to prove a point since they are in the Pac-2? Who knows, it was our closest game, but still was far from a winner.

Boise State @ Washington

I don’t even know what to say here. Me taking Boise State +14 was horrible. I felt sick to my stomach in the 2nd Quarter. This was the worst bet of them all. I thought Boise State could chew the clock with their rushing game and their defense could hold down the UW offense. But their defense got embarrassed by Penix and company.

Washington is a very good football team. DeBoer is one of the best coaches in the Pac-12 and doesn’t get enough credit. Penix is a stud and the receivers on UW are no joke. Odunze, McMillan, and Polk are going to be a problem. This a CFP year or bust for the Huskies. It’s going to be hard for me to bet against them for the rest of the year.

North Carolina vs South Carolina

In our final game of the weekend, we had South Carolina – North Carolina over 63.5 points. I mean, this was the cherry on top. Everything was going great in the first half, then in the 2nd half, South Carolina decided to take a nap. Their offensive line fell asleep, and Rattler had no time to throw the ball. Not to mention the running game was non-existent for the gamecocks. If they don’t address those O-line issues, boy they are in for a long year.

Last year North Carolina had one of the worst defenses. They looked a lot more physical on both sides of the ball. Their D-line looks scary good. They also ran the ball a lot more that chewed up the clock. The Tar Heels look a lot better than they did last year. More physical and they actually play defense now (wish I knew this before I lost money). But this is what week 1 is for, to see who is real and who are frauds.

Yes, we went 0-4. We are starting in a hole. But that’s okay. We have another 11+ weeks to get this ship turned around. Many people crumble and go hide in a hole when they lose a few bets. Not here at Rodfather Bets. We are here all year long and we will make up for this embarrassing weekend.

Rodfather Bets Top 25 – Week 4

As many noticed, I did not have any week 3 rankings. People asked why is that? Multitude of reasons, but it won’t happen again. Sorry Gents, but now let’s get into it!

  1. Georgia
The Bulldogs had a rough first half. Defense was lazy, offense was off to a slow start, and they weren’t playing with a lot of energy out the gate. The second half was what we were expecting from the defense. It seems like Carson Beck is still getting comfortable, but Georgia will stay at #1 until they lose.
  2. Michigan
Not much to say here. Michigan has played 3 mickey mouse teams. And they rolled in all of them. Jim Harbaugh is back this weekend, which might give this team an extra spark going heading into Big 10 play. Rutgers looks good over the first few weeks, and I don’t expect this to be an easy test. The Wolverines should win and the 2 spot is where they deserve to be.
  3. USC
Caleb Williams is the Heisman front runner, and this defense woke up a few weeks back when they ROLLED Stanford. If Alex Grinch has this defense anywhere respectable, this team is going to be dangerous coming down the stretch in the loaded Pac-12 (RIP).
  4. Washington
This Washington offense is the real deal. Top 5 in the country with all of their WR weapons and Penix leading the way. Penix is my Heisman #2 right behind Caleb Williams. Michigan State is no good, but it was impressive how they made them look like Group of 5 team. The Huskies have an easy stretch (excluding Oregon) until November. That is when we see if they are the real deal.
  5. Ohio State
Ohio State’s defense has been leading the way for the Buckeyes this year. Kyle McCord has looked better the last two weeks, so let’s see if that confidence can carry over this weekend. Big showdown in South Bend this Saturday. A lot of Notre Dame talk, which may be good for the Buckeyes to play loose and come out with a huge road win before going into Big 10 play.
  6. Texas
Is Texas back? We will see. They had a huge win 2 weeks ago in Tuscaloosa and had sloppy game against a gritty Wyoming team (even though they won by 21). Texas will have a target on their back all year long since this is there last year in the Big 12 and they are just, Texas. Don’t be surprised if Baylor keeps this game close tomorrow.
  7. Florida State
Last week was a scare against Boston College. After 2 strong weeks, the Seminoles looked sloppy and not entirely focused last Saturday. Which is why they dropped a few slots. The defense better play better than they did last week if they want to end their 9 year losing streak against the Clemson Tigers.
  8. Notre Dame
This team is rolling and now have a chance to make a statement game. They got past their one real test in NC State and looked phenomenal. Most recently, rolled through Central Michigan and they should have good momentum with the Buckeyes coming to town. If there is any year the Irish beat the Buckeyes, this would be one of their better chances. But we will see come Saturday night.
  9. Penn State
The Nittany Lions have had one of the tougher schedules out of the top schools thus far. Now they have a chance to make a statement with Iowa coming to town. I don’t see a world where the Hawkeyes can come in University Park and steal a win. This defense is for real and the Drew Allar and the running game for the Nittany Lions looks like they can hold their own vs the top dogs in the Big 10.
  10. Utah
The Utes have weathered the storm with Bryson Barnes and Nate Johnson behind center. With Cam Rising coming back soon, this should give the Utes the lift they need going into Pac-12 play. Utah doesn’t lose at home so it will be hard for UCLA to come into town with a freshman QB and steal a conference win. The Utes defense is the real deal and with the combination of Cam Rising, CFP is not out of the picture.
  11. Oregon State
The Beavs are physical football team. Their defense seems to be the anchor and the offense will need to do just enough for them to win. They had a good 3 game stretch to start the season, but playing some lousy offenses. Going into Pullman, this will be their biggest test. Can the defense make enough stops and maybe get a turnover or 2? That’s needed for the to go into Martin stadium and slow down Cam Ward and company. I expect this Pac-2 game to be a good one!
  12. Oregon
The Ducks. The ole Mighty Ducks! Is this Bo Nix’s year? Or will he collapse like usual? The Ducks took care of business out of conference, now it gets interesting. It will be interesting to see how Coach Prime and the Buffs do in their first Pac-12 matchup. It feels like Oregon will be able to put up points this year, but will their defense be able to make consistent stops? First step comes this Saturday and we will get some answers soon.
  13. Oklahoma
Boomer Sooner is off to a helluva start. Smoked some pewee teams like Arkansas State and Tulsa, now we see how they do in Big-12 play. Again, like Texas, they will have a target on their back each game. But this team may be back on the right track after a disastrous 2022 season.
  14. North Carolina
Don’t sleep on these Tar Heels. They have played a tough 3 games to start the year and came out 3-0. This team looks a lot more physical this year and Drake Maye has been off to a really slow start. If he can get it together and start playing up to his standard. They could be in a battle for the ACC with Florida State, Miami, and the others.
  15. Ole Miss
Lane Kiffin has this offense rolling per usual. Jaxon Dart is playing some great ball and it will be interesting to see if he can take this into Alabama and continue his success. Ole Miss haven’t beat Alabama since 2015. Will this be the year they do it again? Idk, but they deserve the spot of Alabama for this week, let’s see if they can keep it.
  16. Alabama
Nick Saban experimented with a Tyler Buchner and Ty Simpson against USF. And it was…. ugly. Milroe is their best option, by far. But he was shaky against Texas 2 weeks back. The middle of the field throws were off and it felt like he just was looking to run. Big drop from them for the last 2 weeks and I still expect them to get it together. If they lose to Ole Miss, it will be a long year in Tuscaloosa.
  17. LSU
The Tigers are trending up and doing it quickly. The Florida State outing was ugly, but they looked fantastic @ Mississippi State. They are still a top team in the SEC and they will show it over the year. But they have no room for error if they are looking for a CFP bid this year.
  18. Washington State
The Cougs are off to a hot start. Blowing out two opponents and winning a gritty contest vs Wisconsin. Cam Ward is playing well with the new OC, Ben Arbuckle. Their matchup with the Beavers will be an interesting one and will be fascinating to see if they can run the same gameplan as they did against the Badgers. This is my Alma Mater, so I may be slightly biased here.
  19. Miami
College football is always better when the Canes are good. Has Mario Christobal turned around this program already? Tyler Van Dyke is playing at an elite level and the defense is running around with some confidence. They should come out with a win this weekend at Temple.
  20. Duke
The Blue Devils aren’t known for their football success. But this year feels a little different. Their ground game is elite which makes it easy for Riely Leonard to control the offense. The defense is doing their part, and it seems like they will be part of the ACC race come November. They should role through Uconn this weekend.
  21. UCLA
Another Basketball team? Yes, Chip Kelly has replaced a lot of key players, and they look better than many thought. Dante Moore has looked phenomenal since he won the QB job and will be interesting to see what he can do at Utah this weekend. It’s a tough place to play, especially for someone who is so young. This team has potential, but I don’t see a way for them to get a win this weekend, especially if Cam Rising is back.
  22. Colorado
This team has been in the media way too much. I like coach Prime and the Buffs, but I will save you all time and keep it short. Shedeur Sanders is the real deal, and they have the offensive firepower to matchup with the Ducks this weekend. No pressure on this team like last week against Colorado State. Unfortunately, Travis Hunter is out. But I hope to see a back-and-forth game tomorrow.
  23. Iowa
Iowa sored 40 points last week? We won’t be saying that again this year. McNamara makes this offense a little more dynamic, but it is still Hawkeye’s football. If they go down early, it’s almost impossible for them to come back. The defense will need to carry this team all year, and they will probably be out of these rankings after their match against the Nittany Lions.
  24. BYU
Don’t sleep on these Cougars! Big win going into Arkansas and playing a complete football game. They now have Kansas and I think they match up well against the Jayhawks. Slovis was a good addition, but they will need to find some ground game if they are looking to string together wins in the Big-12 this year.
  25. Missouri
Had to get these boys in the top 25. Experienced team but questionable coaching. Had to show love for Big #92

Rodfather Bets Top 25 Week 2

We are back with our week 2 Rodfather Bets Top 25! Not much movement on this list, but here we go.

  1. Georgia
The 2x National Champions will hold this spot until they lose. Not much to say here after their week 1 beat down to UT Martin.
  2. Alabama
Milroe looks like a solid QB after Bryce Young’s departure. Defense was nails and was a good warm-up game before Texas comes to town. Could be a blood bath tomorrow.
  3. Michigan
No Harbaugh, no problem. J.J McCarthy looked smooth and it’s good to see Blake Corum back. Solid #3 for now.
  4. Florida State
Big jump for Florida State here. They embarrassed LSU on Sunday Night. Defense has some bigtime players and the offense was efficient besides a few drops. Coleman and Wilson are going to be a great Duo at WR and Jordan Travis looked relaxed as the captain of that offense. Is this the year for the Noles? Time will tell.
  5. Ohio State
Dropped one spot. Defense looks elite but big question mark on the QB play. That better be Kyle McCord’s worst game or the Buckeyes may not be as good as we all thought.
  6. USC
Caleb Williams hasn’t missed a beat. The best player in college football and the offense is going to roll this year. Defense still a question mark. Maybe they are playing lazy with these low-quality teams? Will be interesting to see how they deal with Stanford.
  7. Notre Dame
Sam Hartman was a perfect addition to this team. Defense looks solid and Hartman is really going to take them to a new level this year. Balanced team and moves up a few spots here.
  8. Tennessee
Milton is a great addition to this offense after the departure of Hendon Hooker. Rushing attack was solid but receivers could use a little work. Getting the week 1 rust out of the way.
  9. Utah
The Pac-12 champions looked good in their debut. Weathered the storm well with Cam Rising out against Florida. Whittingham always has this team playing well. We will see how they progress when Rising returns.
  10. Penn State
Drew Allar might be the answer for the Nittany Lions. Defense played solid and this team likes to cover spreads. I have this noted!
  11. Washington
Penix is going to be a Heisman candidate. Offense is one of the best in the country. One question mark is the running game. But if Penix keeps playing at this level, the run game may not be needed.
  12. Texas
Texas was shaky on Saturday. No Robinson is going to take some time getting used to but the defense still looks like the backbone of this team. Alabama is a steep hill to climb in week 2.
  13. Oregon State
Was DJ Uiagalelei the problem at Clemson? Doesn’t look like it. The Beavs have a balanced attack and a defense that is experienced. They have more to play for being apart of the now Pac-2.
  14. Oregon
One below Oregon State. The Ducks lost to the Beavs last year and I think Oregon State got even better. Which is why I won’t jump them until the Beavs lose or look bad. Could be on upset alert @ Texas Tech this week.
  15. North Carolina
One of the best-looking teams in week one that actually played a relevant opponent. Maye didn’t play well, and they still rolled the Gamecocks. Physical on both sides of the ball and they actually have a run game this year with British Brooks and Omarion Hampton. Big jump for the Tar Heels.
  16. Kansas State
Not much to say here. Not going to lie, I didn’t watch the game at all but they took care of business and pitched a shutout. 16 seems fitting for now.
  17. LSU
Sloppy play from LSU on Sunday night. Florida State looks like a problem and it was a tough spot for the Tigers in week 1. Playing basically a road game against a top 5 team. Tigers should turn it around but they don’t look like a CFP team like many expected.
  18. Ole Miss
The Lane Kiffin led Rebels took care of Mercer like we all expected. Jaxson Dart will be more comfortable in the offense this year. The big question will be the defense. I don’t think they are as good as the Tigers and it will be an interesting watch this weekend @Tulane.
  19. Oklahoma
Are the Sooners back? I give them a little bit of a jump because of the dominance they showed last Saturday. We will see if they can dominate SMU this weekend or not. They do have potential but how good will Gabriel and company be actually be?
  20. Wisconsin
Little bit of a shaky start for Luke Fickell’s new club. Mordecai had some trouble in the area, but the ground game looked like the Wisconsin we all know and (sometimes) love. Think they could be on serious upset alert in Pullman this weekend.
  21. Tulane
Many thought this would be an upset, but they rolled South Alabama. The run game was hurt with Spears now gone, but Pratt and company lit it up in the air. They have a big opportunity against Ole Miss to make some serious noise.
  22. Colorado
The talk of the weekend was about Primetime and those Buffs. Stealing a game @TCU. The Buffs have 3 weapons on offense in Sanders, Edwards, and of course Travis Hunter. The big question mark will be the defense. For now, they deserve to be in the top 25 and all eyes are on the Nebraska home opener.
  23. UCLA
Don’t sleep on the Bruins. They found their QB in Freshman Dante Moore Saturday night. Defense looks fierce and I have all the confidence in the world that Chip Kelly will get this offense working quickly. They Pac-12 is by far the most deep conference this year (RIP).
  24. Duke
Clemson looked awful. Was this because Duke is good or because Clemson stinks? I think a little bit of both. Duke’s defense uses the bend don’t break mentality, which worked Monday Night. Riley Leonard looks like a Walmart version of Danny Dimes. Which isn’t a great thing, but not a bad thing either. Think this team is built to win some games and end in the upper end of the ACC. They deserve a top 25 rank for at least this week.
  25. Miami
Flip a coin! This spot could go to anyone. But I’m giving it too Miami. Took care of the irrelevant Miami (OH) and now have a big test in Texas A&M. Are the Canes back? I think they can pull out a win, at home against the Aggies. Mario Cristobal has one job, get Miami back to being relevant.
